Tutor Profile.
Since 2004, I have worked extensively in both mainstream and specialist SEN education. In senior
leadership roles, I was responsible for the quality of teaching and learning across whole schools, and I have led a number of education departments. I have over 10 years’ experience teaching AQA English Language and Literature and have worked as an examiner. For the past five years, I’ve also been tutoring online, supporting students from KS1 through to GCSE across a range of subjects.
In 2012, I joined the senior leadership team of a SEN school, overseeing the quality of teaching and learning. Alongside this role, I taught English and Humanities and have since developed a strong reputation for helping students achieve excellent outcomes, particularly in GCSE English. I draw on my experience as an examiner to teach strategically, ensuring students understand how to meet assessment objectives and build exam confidence.
Although trained as an English specialist, my tutoring expertise spans a wide range of subjects including English, maths, and humanities. I bring a flexible, responsive approach that adapts to the needs of each learner.
My teaching journey began in 1996 after completing a TEFL qualification at the University of Liverpool. I spent six years teaching English in Japan, before returning to the UK to complete my PGCE. I took up my first teaching role as Joint Head of Humanities in a Brighton school, where I worked for four years before moving into specialist education.
I have extensive experience supporting neurodiverse children and young people, including those with ASC, ADHD, PDA, dyslexia, and dyspraxia. My current role at an independent school in Hove involves teaching GCSE English and KS2 students with a variety of additional needs, many of whom are working significantly below age-related expectations. I also have experience delivering phonics at KS1 level.
My approach is deeply child-centred: I prioritise building trusted relationships and engagement first, creating a foundation from which academic confidence and progress can grow. I currently tutor five online students preparing for their 2025 GCSEs, and I am known for combining high expectations with warmth, creativity, and personalised support.
